We continue to present more options to escape the heat while taking care of ourselves. Today we would like to talk to you about natural hot springs and spas.

NATURAL THERMAL WATERS

Throughout Spain we can enjoy thermal baths surrounded by nature, providing natural waters with excellent health properties. Some of them, not too far from the Murcia region. This is the case with places like Alhama de Almería, Zujar and Fuencaliente de Huéscar, all located in eastern Andalusia, a couple of hours away by car. Also, in the neighboring province of Albacete, you can find several hot springs along the Cabriel River, its valley has been declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO.

Closer to us, in the town of Mula, spring waters emerge from the heart of the earth. Its waters go directly to different private hot springs and baths in the town. The water temperature is about 37º, so any time of year is a good time to “soak.” Of course, in summer, it is better to take a lukewarm or cold shower afterwards.

SPAS

Until the beginning of the 20th century, a spa was a place where people sought to achieve a therapeutic effect through water. Then, other types of treatments such as massages, special therapies and beauty were progressively included.

Currently, a spa is understood to be an establishment that allows different therapies to be carried out with the use of water. These are usually health and leisure centres that have various types of swimming pools, jets, saunas and jacuzzis, with a wide range of treatments. They have proliferated considerably lately, so you won’t have to go far to find somewhere to take a dip.

Unlike spas, spas do not use mineral-medicinal waters. Even so, they can bring us benefits both physically and mentally.  The most notable are:

  • Physical: muscle relaxation and improvement of contractures, activation of the circulatory system, stimulation of the immune system, anti-inflammatory effect, promotes the digestive system, helps combat fluid retention and lose weight.
  • Psychological: increased mental energy, helps combat stress, improves mood and emotional balance
  • Aesthetics: tones and nourishes the skin, helps eliminate toxins, hydrates the skin and eliminates dead cells

Each of them constitutes a good reason to plan a getaway and enjoy all the benefits that water brings us.
