Ready to step into the future? This January, Spain introduces the most advanced emergency system in Europe.
In 2026, the traditional warning triangles will disappear from Spanish roads and be replaced by the V-16 beacon – a safer, more visible and fully connected system.
Why the change?
Placing triangles on the road means getting out of your car in the middle of traffic, which has caused an increase in accidents in recent years. The V-16 eliminates that risk, as it can be positioned in seconds without leaving the vehicle.
What is the V-16 and how is it used?
The V-16 is a small flashing light that emits 360º beams visible from over one kilometre away. To use it, simply open the window and place it on the roof. It is suitable for all types of vehicles.
From 2026, in addition to signalling your vehicle, it will automatically send its geolocation to the DGT, so your position appears on traffic panels and in nearby connected cars (thanks to the V-27 system).
The information will be transmitted through the DGT 3.0 platform, an intelligent network still being developed, which connects vehicles and roads so they can “talk” to each other. Thanks to it, if there is a breakdown or an accident, other drivers will know instantly and can slow down or take an alternative route. The aim is for everyone to travel more safely and with fewer traffic jams.
Practical tips
- Don’t wait until 2026. You can already use the V-16 and avoid the risk of stepping onto the road.
- Check its approval. Make sure the beacon is authorised by the DGT and connected to the DGT 3.0 platform. Not all those sold on the market are valid.
- Keep it powered. Always carry spare batteries or check its charge – a flat V-16 is useless in an emergency.
- Remember the deadline. From January 2026, triangles will be banned, and not carrying a V-16 could lead to fines of up to €200.
A European reference
Spain will be the first EU country to make the V-16 compulsory. Other countries are already watching closely and will probably adopt similar systems in the coming years.
With the V-16, you gain not only safety but also peace of mind: your vehicle will be signalled, located and connected – without you needing to step outside.
