Just like last year with the thermal springs, I’d like to suggest some new refreshing ideas to help you cope with the intense summer heat. This time, let’s explore some of the most attractive natural pools and bathing spots in the region.

Before setting off, a few tips: wear comfortable footwear, bring water, sun protection (especially in summer), and perhaps something to eat if your outing ends up being a long one. Most of these places are easy to find using map or navigation apps. Ready to enjoy nature?

We begin near Bullas, about 3 km away, where you’ll find the Salto del Usero. Many consider it the most beautiful natural pool in the region. It was declared the fifth Natural Monument of the Region of Murcia in 2022. Water cascades down into a natural pool that attracts visitors all year round, especially in summer. You must book in advance, as capacity is limited to 80 people. All information on bookings, parking, opening hours, guided tours, etc., can be found at the following link. Although access is easy, you’ll need to walk just over 1 km from the car park via a pedestrian path -> https://bullas.es/turismo/reservas-salto-del-usero/

Also near Bullas, around 9 km from the Salto del Usero, you’ll find another beautiful spot: Pasico Ucenda. This is a stunning pool with a waterfall fed by the River Mula. Though less known, it’s very picturesque and far less busy. It’s accessible by car, with parking nearby.

Now we head to the Moratalla area, home to several pools and ideal spots for cooling off, though these are located in the countryside or mountains and involve longer walks with some difficulty. Following the course of the River Alhárabe, you’ll come across:

Poza de Somogil – A thermal pool located between Moratalla and Fuente de Benizar. The water emerges at about 24°C. During rainy periods, a waterfall forms with a good flow. The nearby La Puerta campsite is another attraction. Moderate difficulty access.

Cascada de las Tortugas – A lesser-known but amazing spot. Located in the Arroyo Hondares ravine, near the village of Benizar. It features a 9-metre waterfall that plunges into a limestone pool surrounded by lush greenery. If you follow the riverbed from here, you’ll reach another waterfall you can walk behind: Cascada de los Gemelos. The trail is not difficult.

Estrecho de Bolvonegro – A natural gem along the trail of the same name. Rocks shaped by water and time form a truly unique landscape. Along the way, you’ll find pools, rock basins, waterfalls and spectacular views of vertical cliffs. -> Information leaflet

Other beautiful spots to cool off:

Fuente Caputa and Rambla Perea – About 10 km from Mula, near the hamlet of Yéchar. Several small waterfalls, pools, two archaeological sites and the remains of a Roman dam make this an excellent hiking route. It’s a designated Site of Community and Geological Interest. Easy access.

Fuente del Gorgotón – Between Cieza and Calasparra, 300 m from the Almadenes canyon. This thermal spring, like a natural jacuzzi, stands out for its landscape of limestone shaped by water. It’s close to the Almadenes Interpretation Centre.

To finish, let’s not forget the region’s river beaches, perfect for escaping the heat:

Playa de Coy – In the La Fuente area, 40 km from Lorca. Equipped with barbecues, leisure areas and thatched parasols. Ideal for enjoying a natural setting without heading to the coast.

Playa El Arenal – On the River Segura, about 10 km from Cieza, in the Arenal garden next to the Iron Bridge.

La Presa (Cieza) – Accessible by car to the recreational area of the same name. From there, paths on both sides of the road follow the river, with bridges and walkways.

El Jarral (Abarán) – On the left bank of the Segura, accessible from Avenida del Río Segura or via the riverside walk from the municipal park. Summer access is regulated.

Archena Playa – From the centre of Archena, head towards the River Segura. This area is well set up and easy to reach.

Keep in mind that in summer, water levels are lower and vegetation is less lush — but these places still have their own special charm.

Why not go and enjoy a refreshing dip in one of these unique spots?
